President’s Message January, 2010

2010 Well Wishes to you! I hope that each of you and your loved ones are healthy and safe!

Another exciting year has been relegated to the history books! As you know, RWHRMA achieved, with the help of MANY volunteers, a number of noteworthy milestones in 2009, including being awarded the Pinnacle Award, jointly with our sister chapter, TSHRM. Stay tuned for details about the award presentation!

Looking forward, the 2010 chapter leaders and volunteers are already working to build on the success of last year’s volunteer efforts – and those of prior years’ volunteers who laid the foundation for our chapter as we know it today.

Our Monthly Meeting Programs Team has declared 2010 as “The Year of Wellness.”  Wellness is a popular topic these days, and we plan to apply that perspective to how “well” our HR strategies, departments, companies, benefit offerings, and ourselves are when confronting current challenges in the workplace environment. I think you will enjoy – and benefit from – the cohesive theme throughout 2010!

Near the end of 2009, we conducted a member survey, and one of the issues expressed was a desire for more of our programs to be HRCI pre-certified.I agree, and for those of you who may not recall, in 2009, 9 of 11 monthly programs, 4 of 4 Compensation and Benefits programs, and 4 of 4 Masters Series programs, and our Changing Faces Conference were all HRCI pre-certified. We plan to continue offering pre-certified programs in 2010, and we urge you to attend and learn.

If you are looking for opportunities to serve through volunteering, we have spots for you. Stay tuned for more information on openings – or better yet, contact Bonnie Gibson, 2010 Volunteer Director, or Marieke Pieterman, 2010 Volunteer Coordinator! It takes over 100 dedicated volunteers to make our ongoing chapter operations successful!

And, with hosting the 2011 NCSHRM State Conference, we will need additional volunteer hearts/minds/talent this year and next in order to plan and deliver the most successful NCSHRM State Conference yet! More details forthcoming on this exciting initiative.

Lastly, on a more somber note, we will be observing a moment of silence at the January chapter meeting to recognize and remember Jan Sharp, a former President of RWHRMA, who passed in December, 2009. Jan served as an inspiration to all of us.

Make it a great year – personally and professionally!

All the best,
Mike Owen, SPHR
RWHRMA President, 2010
